About The Royal British Legion
The Royal British Legion is the UK’s largest military charity and is at the heart of a wider national network of organisations that work to support our Armed Forces Community. Over the last 100 years, with our scale and reach, we have acted not only as champions for remembrance and as the largest provider of charitable support, we have also been one of the most powerful voices on behalf of our veterans, serving personnel and their families. As a previous Prime Minister said, ‘when the Legion speaks Government listens.’
It's our mission, this scale and this opportunity that makes the Legion such a fulfilling place to work.
The Campaigns, Policy & Research team is central to one of the Legion’s enduring functions, of ensuring that the needs and interests of the Armed Forces community are reflected in the policies and decisions that might affect them. Over the last century, the Legion has achieved real, lasting change for those we support, from the fight for fair compensation to employment opportunities, from enshrining the principles of the Armed Forces Covenant in law, to including a question in the recent national census.
If you want to give your days meaning, to put your knowledge, skills and passion into a role with real impact and to be part of a successful, inclusive team that constructively and collaboratively faces every challenge - we think you’ll find a role here that works for you.
The Role
Reporting to the Director General, you will lead our campaigning, policy and research work, to ensure that the Royal British Legion is positioned to secure policy change at a national, devolved and local level for the benefit of those we support and is the leading, respected and credible voice in understanding the needs and representing the views of the Armed Forces community. You’ll work closely with staff throughout the charity and with other Armed Forces charities and partner organisations to maximise our impact and represent the needs of the Armed Forces community at the highest levels.
For this exciting role, you will need to have excellent understanding of campaigning, public policy work, of unlocking the value of strategically driven research and of harnessing the power of supporters and other stakeholders. An experienced leader of diverse and dispersed teams with a deep understanding of politics and government, and experience of developing effective partnerships at national and local level, you will have achieved real change through your influencing and campaigning work.
This is an exciting opportunity to lead the RBL’s work to champion and advocate for the interests, welfare and contribution of the Armed Forces community, and make a difference to their lives.
As an inclusive employer, we welcome conversations on flexible working and any reasonable adjustments that may be required.
Diversity Statement

It’s because of this that we have strived hard to create a One Legion culture that we can all feel part of and succeed in. It’s why we make sure that you have the opportunities you need to learn and develop. It’s why we’re invested in making RBL a truly inclusive place to work, where everyone can be themselves. It’s why you’re welcome, whoever you might be.
It’s why we welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
